US News and World Repoprt - Best Global Universities 2020

American Institutions Are At The Top.

U.S. News has released its sixth-annual Best Global Universities, and U.S. institutions once again dominate the top 30 schools. Not to be confused with the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings, the global ratings focus on universities’ research and academic reputations - not on their undergraduate programs, and they include universities from across the world - not just the U.S.

The rankings include scores for 1,500 institutions in 81 countries. The U.S. had 249 universities that were ranked, followed by China (188), the U.K. (86), Japan (82) and Germany (66).

The US and China have dominated in the US News & World Report 2020 Best Global Universities Rankings, further cementing research reputations of the two countries’ institutions.

Eight out of ten of the world’s top universities as per the ranking, including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, University of California—Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Princeton University, and the University of Washington, were in the US.

This year’s report includes six new subject rankings on oncology, surgery, cardiac and cardiovascular systems, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering.

In both the engineering and computer science rankings, four of the top 10 schools are based in China.

The UK had 86 universities included (5.7%) and then Japan with 82 (5.5%). Germany was fifth in the overall world rankings with 66 universities (4.4%).

Oxford and Cambridge were the only two non-American universities that made the top list. The only significant change in the top 10 rankings was Cambridge dropping to 9th place from 7th last year.

The report also identified the top three universities by global region. The top universities in Africa were the University of Cape Town (South Africa), the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa)  and Stellenbosch University (South Africa).

Asia’s top universities were the National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University (China) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).

The top universities in Australia and New Zealand were the University of Melbourne (Australia), the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland (Australia).

In Europe, Oxford (UK), Cambridge (UK) and Imperial College London (UK) took the top spots, while in Latin America the highest ranked universities were Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil),  Pontificia University Católica de Chile and State University of Campinas (Brazil).

Among schools ranked 11-20, eight were located in the U.S.: Johns Hopkins, Yale, University of Chicago, UCLA, University of California-San Francisco, University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, University of Toronto, University of California-San Diego, Imperial College London.

Rounding out the top 30 were the University College London, Duke, Cornell, Northwestern, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, New York University, University of Edinburg, and the University of British Columbia.

Methodology

Unlike the Best Colleges methodology, which, despite improvements, continues to be subject to numerous criticisms, the Best Global Universities employs 13 indicators, most of which are objective measures of the research productivity and impact of faculty affiliated with a given university. Thus, it represents an evaluation scheme worth paying attention to.

Schools are assigned an overall rating from 1-100 based on a weighted combination of the standardized scores for each of these indicators:

1-2. Global research reputation (12.5%) and regional research reputation (12.5%), which are derived from a five-year aggregate of Clarivate Analytics’ Academic Reputation Survey. Unlike many reputation ratings, for which there’s precious little assurance that the raters know very much about the school they’re evaluating, Clarivate Analytics asks respondents to give their opinions about programs in the academic disciplines with which they are familiar, allowing respondents to rate universities at the field and department level, rather than at the overall institutional level.

This method yields ratings that - while still subjective - should be better informed and less subject to “halo effects,” a bias where an overall positive impression of an object colors the perception of every aspect of it.

3-5. Research productivity is assessed by a count of journal publications (10%), books (2.5%), and conference papers (2.5%) produced from the five-year period, 2013-17.

6-9. Scholarly impact is measured by calculating four different measures of how often a piece of scholarship was cited by others: normalized citation impact (10%), total citations (7.5%), number of publications among the 10% most cited (12.5%), and percentage of total publications among the 10% most cited (10%).

10-11. Collaboration with other scholars is judged on two indicators: international collaboration (5%), the proportion of papers containing international co-authors divided by the proportion of co-authored papers in a school’s host country; and the percentage of publications with international collaborators (5%).

12-13. Two measures of scientific excellence round out the list: the number of papers that are in the top 1% most cited in their respective fields (5%) and the percentage of an institution’s total publications that are among the top 1% most highly cited overall (5%).

Ranking systems are always subject to criticisms, and even though most of the measures U.S. News employs to rank global universities are objective counts (perhaps more than necessary, given the overlap in some of them), a quarter of the overall score still rests on subjective - albeit probably well-informed - opinion.

Nonetheless, the fact that two-thirds of the top 30 research universities are located in the United States means something. Coming on the heels of the most recent Nobel Laureate awards, another international recognition where U.S. scholars again were by far the most frequently honored, American research universities appear to be maintaining their collective reputation as global leaders in original scholarship and academic reputation.

2017 Global Universities - Academic Ranking

The third annual U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings were produced to provide insight into how universities compare globally. As an increasing number of students plan to enroll in universities outside of their own country, the Best Global Universities rankings – which focus specifically on schools' academic research and reputation overall and not on their separate undergraduate or graduate programs – can help those applicants accurately compare institutions around the world.
