Junipero Serra High School
Features
Junpero Serra High School is an outstanding, all-boys Catholic College Preparatory located in the heart of the Peninsula, between San Francisco and Silicon Valley.
Serra offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, which includes a rich diversity of classes and an extensive array of AP and Honors courses. Serra AP pass rate is 25 points above the national average at 82 percent, and close to 100 percent of our graduates go on to college.
In 2011, the new Center of the Arts and Sciences was opened. Located in the heart of the campus, the Center becomes a new focal point for the school where unique programs for art, music and sciences come together under one roof.
The Paseo, the buildings new entry court, provides much needed multi-functional outdoor gathering space. On the ground floor, the music classroom is designed to enrich the music program by providing space that meets its various acoustical and spatial requirements. The 2D and 3D art classrooms, also on the ground floor, have large sliding doors that open up onto the Fine Arts Courtyard. Five science classrooms are situated on the upper floor and incorporate new technology and a layout that supports the expanded science curriculum required for graduation and continuation on to college. A 25yd x 38m pool for competitive swimming and water polo incorporates a shallower zone for summer youth programs and is located adjacent to the building.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
In general, students will be placed in honors or AP classes based on the following criteria: Students currently in an honors class who earn 80% or higher (B- average) qualify for the next honors course. Students in a non-honors class who earn 90% or higher (A- average) qualify for consideration for the next honors course. The Department Chair will make the final determination for eligibility for all courses. Three years of science are required for graduation.
• Students are required to take Biology (Biology, Honors Biology) and Chemistry (Chemistry, Chemistry in the Community, or Honors Chemistry)
• Students who are interested in science or who plan to major in science in college are recommended to take four years of science
NOTE: U.C. requires two years of lab science and recommends three years of lab science. They also recommend that student take all three disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
