Rice University 是一所小型的私立大學，與其他兩所，北卡羅萊納州的杜克大學和弗吉尼亞州的弗吉尼亞大學齊名，號稱為南方哈佛。

Rice University 多年來以工程、管理、科學、藝術、人類學聞名，以高水準的教學態度、低廉的學費，吸引了不少家庭經濟條件不是很好的學子前來求學，並且提供了213個體育項目方面的獎學金。在眾多的科系當中，物理、英語、歷史、考古學非常受學生們歡迎，工程、醫學預科的錄取率極低，競爭激烈。

Rice University 採用小班制教學，以致學生得到全面的關注和研究機會。萊斯大學校園不大，但卻美麗、和諧，加上師生之間的互動良好，充滿活力，其優秀的學術水準，在全美大學排行榜時常可見。就讀的學生們，讀理工方面的還是佔大多數。Rice University 屬於校風十分開放的大學，然而比起全美其他所大學來講，還是較為保守許多，在校園的生活十分的輕鬆自然。
